You're Amazing!
Your Resume Should Show It
Are you a talented and accomplished product manager?
But you are struggling to land interviews despite your experience and impact?
It's not you - it's your resume.
I've reviewed hundreds of product manager resumes just in 2024 - and most are terrible!
- They're boring.
- They all sound the same.
- They are hard to read.
- And most importantly: These product managers are amazing but they don't sound amazing in their resumes.
I am here to help amazing people like you sound amazing in your resume.
Why? Your resume is your sales letter, and your goal with a sales letter is to get the reader - in this case, the hiring manager - to take action.
To bring you in for an interview!
If your resume is boring and doesn't show how amazing you are - you won't get the interview.
To be clear - I don’t just rewrite your resume using a bunch of obsolete old rules (most of which were never true anyway!).
Instead, I work side-by-side with you to extract your unique experiences, successes, and talents - using my Narrative Mastery System - and turn them into resume bullet points - using my Impact Bullet technique - that showcases your impact as a product manager.
A resume that will cause the hiring manager to say, "That's amazing! I wonder if they can do that for me? Let's bring them in for an interview."
And you get a lot more than just a resume. You get the skills - and practice - to tell your own professional story with confidence, whether it’s in your resume, your LinkedIn profile, or in interviews.
In this collaborative, done-with-you process, we bring out the best of your career story. Your resume not only reflects your skills but demonstrates the impact you've had.
Characteristics of A Resume That Gets The Hiring Manager To Take Action
It Keeps The Hiring Manager Reading
They can quickly see you are the person they are looking for, you've done useful and interesting things, and you have some differentiators.
And it's not boring! You don't sound exactly like every other candidate in their pile of 200 resumes.
It provides A Solution
Your resume shows you understand the hiring manager's problems and how they are suffering - and how you solve their suffering.
It's not just conforming to the job description - which is the minimum bar. It shows how you excelled and made a difference, far beyond "backlog grooming" and "roadmapping."
It differentiates You
It shows why they should consider you over potentially dozens of other equally "qualified" candidates.
The hiring manager is reading 100s of resumes for every job opening. 90% of those resumes say exactly the same thing.
I'll help you stand above that 90%!
It Tells The Stories Of Your Success
Your impact is shown in your resume’s bullet points - tiny summaries of your biggest successes, the ones you will share in interviews.
The hiring manager doesn't care if you can manage the backlog. They care if you can solve the business problems they are facing -that aren't mentioned in the job description.
What I Will Do With yOu
I'll help you make your resume into a sales page (still in the format of a resume!)
It will instantly answer the hiring manager's questions:
- Are you the right kind of person? Do you know how to do the job they need done?
- What's special about you?
I'll share the secret to a Summary section that keeps the hiring manager reading past the first 10 seconds.
They start to get excited at this point so they keep reading.
Then, we need them to read at least one of your bullet points and get even more excited, because they'll quickly see that you are amazing and have had a big impact.
I work with you to articulate the stories of your most impressive accomplishments, using my Narrative Mastery System.
Then transform them into must-read bullet points using my Impact Bullet technique.
(And show you how to do it!)
Bonus: I'll also train you how to tell those stories with the biggest impact in your job interviews.
Next, I'll show you how to use quantitative and qualitative data in far more effective ways to magnify the impact of your stories and your bullet points.
I'll give you my rules for job titles in your Experience section.
I'll guide you on what to put in your Skills section.
And the result is a resume with a significantly better chance of ending up on the "To be interviewed" pile.
What You'll Get
By the end of our work together, you’ll have a resume that not only gets you noticed but also reflects your distinct value as a product manager. The process includes:
There Are A Lot of Myths Out There About Resumes
Many resume "rules" and guidelines are useless, and some are actively wrong and will prevent you from getting interviews.
The Job Description
Do not prepare your resume to address the job description. Prepare your resume to show how you will make a difference for the hiring manager.
The job description is a wishlist for the minimum qualifications for the role.
But the hiring manager doesn’t care (much) about the job description. They want to know if you can solve their problems. (Which don't appear in the job description!)
Problems like: loss of market share, customer dissatisfaction, a competitive threat - or even creating a new product and taking it to market!
Simply matching every requirement in the job description will not get you an interview.
More Terrible Rules
- "Keep it to one page" - nope, won't help you get interviews (and often results in WORSE resumes).
- "Use a number in every bullet point" - not wrong, but not great. Numbers work if you put enough context around them so the hiring manager can see it's a meaningful result. "20% revenue growth" is not *necessarily* meaningful, even though it seems obvious.
- "Keep your bullet points to one or two lines" - nope, 'cause the most you can do in that length is say "I did my job." The candidates you're competing with are talking about *outcomes* they created and problems they solved. You can't do that in one or two lines.
I know all the dumb old rules - and I know what to do instead to make your resume pop - and prompt the hiring manager to say, "Let's interview them! They sound amazing."
